Bollywood film 'Kites' rises abroad, falls at home

MUMBAI: Bollywood film "Kites" started strongly at the box office in India, raising hopes of the industry's first, badly needed blockbuster of the year, but mixed reviews have dented initial enthusiasm.

Distributors Reliance Big Pictures said the movie, Bollywood's biggest ever overseas release, grossed more than 650 million rupees (13.8 million dollars) worldwide in its opening weekend.

But patchy reviews, trouble relating to the subject and extensive subtitling of the English and Spanish dialogue have conspired to turn domestic audiences and critics off the film, reported to have cost 32 million dollars to make.

"The film had a fantastic opening weekend. It made Rs 30.5 crores (305 million rupees) net and business at multiplexes was strong, but single screens saw large drops," said Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

"The film has cost its distributors an exorbitant amount and at the rate the business has started sliding downwards, they would incur heavy losses on this one," he wrote on bollywoodhungama.com.

"Kites" was the most anticipated Bollywood film this year and had been aggressively marketed, given the lack of other movies to make an impact at the Indian box office other than the recent comedy "Housefull".

Mumbai attacks get the Bollywood treatment

MUMBAI: A new, low-budget Bollywood film depicting the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks opens in India this week, less than a month after the sole surviving gunman was convicted and sentenced to death.

"26/11", which was made for just 20 million rupees (420,000 dollars) with a cast of relative unknowns, is due to hit more than 100 screens across the country on Friday.

Lead actor Rajan Verma dedicated the film to India's police and security services, who battled the 10 heavily armed Islamist militants to bring the bloody, three-day siege to an end.

"The film is a tribute to all the martyrs of Mumbai police and our armed forces who lost their lives in the terrorist attack," said Verma, who plays Pakistani gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab.

"The film has no songs and dance but only action and what happened on that tragic night," he added.

Kasab, 22, was the only gunman captured alive during the attacks, which began on November 26, 2008 and targeted three luxury hotels, the city's main railway station, a popular tourist restaurant and a Jewish centre.

A total of 166 people were killed and more than 300 others were injured.

80 killed as Maoists derail train in India

Maoist rebels derailed a high-speed train packed with sleeping passengers into the path of a freight train in eastern India Friday, killing at least 80 people, police said.

It was the deadliest Maoist attack in recent memory and is likely to ramp up pressure on the government to consider calls for deploying the military in its fight against the rebels.

Police warned the death toll could rise further with more bodies feared trapped in the mangled wreckage after 13 carriages of the Mumbai-bound express from Kolkata careened off the tracks in a remote area of West Bengal.

Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee said the train had been derailed by a "severe bomb blast", but officials said they were looking at evidence that metal plates used to secure adjoining sections of track had been removed.

"It is a clear case of sabotage. The Maoists have done it," West Bengal police chief Bhupinder Singh told reporters at the site. He said Maoist leaflets had been found scattered by the tracks.

The Press Trust of India said it had received a call claiming responsibility by the Maoist-backed People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA), although a PCPA spokesman later contacted the news agency to deny the group's involvement.

"The death toll has risen to 80 and we are still recovering more bodies," West Bengal police inspector general Surajit Kar Purakayastha told AFP.

More than 200 people were reported injured, some of them critically.

The relief teams have been stranded in northern Hunza as the helicopter service is discontinued.

Johnson grabs Northern Trust PGA lead

American Dustin Johnson fired a seven-under 64 at Riviera Country Club to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the 6.4 million-dollar Northern Trust Open.

Johnson made the most of cool, calm morning conditions as he nabbed seven birdies without a bogey on the par-71 layout for a one-stroke lead over Argentina's Andres Romero and American Kevin Stadler.

Ricky Barnes and Brandt Snedeker were two shots back on 66.

"Got off to a good start, had good vibes going all day," said Johnson, who started at the 10th and had two birdies in his first three holes.

After a birdie at the par-five 11th, he drained a 64-foot birdie bomb at the par-four 12th.

Johnson birdied Riviera's other two par-fives - the 17th and the first, missing an eight-foot eagle attempt at No.1.

Johnson, who missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open last week, appears to be building momentum before his title defence at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am next week.

He said he felt at home on the historic Riviera course west of downtown Los Angeles.

"It really fits my eye," he said.

Romero nabbed eight birdies in a six-under 65, more than making up for a double-bogey at the par-four ninth.

Romero, who closed his round with four straight birdies, admitted he might have avoided the big mistake if he'd heeded his caddie's advice on nine.

"My caddie was telling me to hit a seven-iron just to the front of the green, but I'm so stubborn I stayed with the six-iron and it buried in the bunker," he said.

Stadler started on the 10th tee and got hot early, with six of his seven birdies in his first nine holes. He cooled off coming in, with one birdie balanced by a bogey.

Steve Stricker, runner-up here last year to Phil Mickelson, headed a trio on 67. Stricker launched his round with an eagle at the par-five first hole. He added four birdies and two bogeys to finish alongside Steve Lowery and Cameron Beckman.

US, Arabs reach deal at nuclear treaty talks

UNITED NATIONS: The United States and Egypt struck a deal on a push to pressure Israel to ultimately scrap any atomic bombs it has in a bid to avert a collapse of talks on shoring up the global anti-nuclear arms pact, envoys said on Friday.

But they said it was unclear whether Iran would attempt to single-handedly block an agreement on a final declaration that has now been agreed upon by the other 189 signatories of the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, who have been meeting for a month to find ways to strengthen the troubled pact.

"We have a deal that everyone can live with," a Western diplomat told Reuters. "Now the question is will Iran do the right thing."

The latest draft of a final declaration for the NPT review conference calls for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to organize a meeting of all Middle Eastern states in 2012 on how to make the region free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, as demanded by a 1995 NPT resolution.

It also urges Israel to sign the NPT and put its nuclear facilities under U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards -- a passage the Americans had wanted deleted. In the end, they backed down in the interest of salvaging the conference, delegates told Reuters.

The creation of a WMD-free zone would eventually force Israel to abandon any atomic bombs it might have. The Jewish state, which like nuclear-armed India and Pakistan never signed the NPT, is presumed to have a sizable nuclear arsenal but neither confirms nor denies that.

Israel is not participating in the NPT meeting.

Lahore attacks death toll climbs to 81

LAHORE: At least 81 people have been killed and 125 others sustained injures when terrorists in city’s two areas, Garhi Shahu and Model Town, started firing following blasts Friday.

As per latest details, the operation against the attackers has been completed in both the areas, while three terrorists have been killed according to DCO Lahore Sajjad Bhutta.

The wave of terror once again struck the city after Manawan Police Training Centre and attack on Sri Lankan cricket team. The offices of security agencies have also been attacked in the city in last two years.

The worship places of Ahmadis have been targeted this time where several people who were busy offering prayers were trapped.

The bodies and injured have been taken to different hospitals of the city where emergency has been declared.

The police, rangers and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the sites and cordoned off the road.

Twelve people have been killed in Garhi Shahu while 15 killed in Model Town.

The firing once again started after a gap of two hours where two police officials, SP Maroof and SHO Majid, sustained injures.

The fear prevails in the city while several people including women were seen running here and there in search of their beloved ones.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told SAMAA that the operation in Model Town has been completed. “The operation in Garhi Shahu is in final phase.”

He said that the law enforcement agencies have held two terrorists, adding that two suicide jackets have also been seized.

“The security in the city especially on sensitive places has been beefed up.”

Replying to a question Punjab Law Minister denied the security lapse.

Law enforcement agencies have apprehended a suspect from Garhi Shahu.

The firing and blasts took place at 1:35pm in both the areas.

AGENCIES ADD: Gunmen attacked worshippers from a minority Muslim sect in two mosques of the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Friday, taking hostages and killing at least 70 people, officials said.

The gunmen opened fire shortly after Friday prayers and threw what could have been grenades at two Ahmadi mosques in residential neighbourhoods in Pakistan's cultural capital.

Sajjad Bhutta, deputy commissioner of Lahore, said at least 70 people had been killed in the twin attacks on mosques in Garhi Shahu and Model Town. A total of 78 were injured.

The death toll at Garhi Shahu was higher, Bhutta said, because three attackers blew themselves up with suicide vests packed with explosives when police tried to enter the building.

Police are still searching the area as two attackers were still at large.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the incidents would generate greater resolve to combat extremism.

"It's a reminder to the nation that Pakistan will achieve its destiny only after we get rid of the worst type of extremism and fundamentalism," he told a news conference. "The entire nation will fight this evil."

He said one attacker had been arrested. Police in Model Town confirmed one gunmen had been arrested and another killed.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion quickly fell on the Pakistani Taliban.

"It's too early to say who is behind these attacks," said a Lahore-based security official. "But my guess is that like most other attacks, there would be some link to the Taliban or their associated militants."

Punjab's Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the arrested attacker was a teenage Pashtun, an ethnic group making up the majority in parts of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. This, he said, indicaed a link to the Pakistani tribal area of Waziristan and strongly hinted at a Taliban link.

"The prayer leader was giving a sermon when we heard firing and blasts. Everybody stood up and then two gunmen barged into the mosque and sprayed bullets," Fateh Sharif, a 19-year-old student, told Reuters from Model Town.

"They had long beards. They were carrying rucksacks."

Bhutta said a suicide vest laden with explosives was recovered from the Model Town mosque, where some attackers escaped. One fired at a television van before the area was made safe.
